Athlone IT set to host Garda College in Sigerson Cup

Athlone IT face Garda College in the preliminary round of the Sigerson Cup tonight (Tuesday).

AIT manager Paul Conway is anticipating a keenly contested affair at the AIT GAA grounds (throw-in 7pm).

Speaking to the Westmeath Independent about the upcoming game, the former Westmeath and Tang footballer said he hoped the experience of those who played last year would help the team.

“We have some terrific footballers playing with us again this year and we have about 12 of last year's team still available for selection so their experience is invaluable,” said Conway.

"There are three county players from Longford playing with us, and one from Offaly and one from Galway. We are expecting a tough match. We have home advantage so we hope that will play into our hands. Our preparations haven't been going as well as I would have liked. The majority of the lads were still involved with their clubs in the run up to the Christmas break and when we returned, some of them were on county duty. Having said that, we all got together last week and I'm pleased with the effort that has been put in. We are looking forward to the game and I'm confident that the lads will deliver the goods.”
