Leinster title for Nestor
The heading is nothing new for this page but in this case we are not talking about Mark Nestor but his father Hughie who won the Leinster Road Race Championships in Dundalk last weekend when he came home in first place in the veteran race. Representing the Murphy and Gunn team Hughie finished ahead of team mate Terry Ferris with Allen Slevin of Garda Cycling Club in third place. The previous weekend in Navan, Mark Nestor was back on the winners podium when he won the Beechmount Cup, representing the Eurocycles team. Greyhound News It was a busy week for local owners on the greyhound scene with plenty of racing right across the country. Some of the results that caught my eye included the previously featured Woodhill Emperor who qualified for the final of the Shelbourne Park A3 525 which is a €4,000 race. Woodhill Emperor, who had won his quarter final the previous week suffered his first defeat from his six races to date but connections were just happy to have qualified for the final following after their dog was checked on the third bend but still managed to get up and qualify behind Blue Bender. Best wishes to Benny Smyth and trainer Michael Gleeson in the final on Thursday night. Over in Galway on Saturday night Chuck Kelly and trainer Pat Buckley were in the winners enclosure again when Cooldown Jasper was an impressive winner of The Tyrur Lee A4 525 Round 1 heat in an impressive time of 28.96, the fastest time of all the heats in this race. Cooldown Jasper came home 9.5 lengths ahead of West Coast Mall, justifying the 4/6 starting price which had the bookies reeling after an opening show of 4/1. Staying in Galway on Saturday night the last race of the evening was the Shauna Nugent Surgery Appeal A3 525 Semi-Final and the Joseph Mc Mahon owned and trained Baylin Breeze qualified for the final, despite a slow start and better start should feature in the final on Saturday next. In Mullingar on Saturday night the six times winner Toorphelim Lady, owned by Joanne Gillivan and trained by Tony Fallon, made a welcome return to action after a three month break when she finished second to Fahy Angie who managed to hold on after a fast break to pip Toorphelim Lady on the line.
