Map shows motorists the way during N6 closure

Engineers involved in the construction the M6 have released a map charting the proposed road closure and diversion in the Monksland/Summerhill area that"s due to take place from the end of this month. The N6 dual carriageway will be closed from the new roundabout near Summerhill College as far as the eastbound slip roads at the New Tuam Road interchange (N6/R362) to allow for essential construction work on the new M6 in the area around the Elan factory. The Monksland section of the N6 bypass will close from March 30 until July 31, according to Roscommon County Council. Traffic travelling the Dublin Galway route will have to take a diversion at Daneshill, around Danesfort Estate. 'I"ve met with the engineers on the job and they"ve come up with a traffic plan that will avoid any tailbacks or delays,' said Ballinasloe councillor Ollie Moore, who welcomed the new plans. 'Those travelling to Galway will exit off at the Tuam roundabout while those coming from Galway will turn right off the new Summerhill roundabout and take the new road then filter back onto the N6 at the current Elan turnoff.' This new diversion route means that local access for residents and workers in Monksland will be largely unaffected and there will not be a huge traffic backlog in the Baylough or Roscommon Road areas of Athlone. Cllr Moore said that both Galway and Roscommon councils were ensuring that the job would cause as little disruption as possible and this plan was probably the best option available.
