Sports award for Bower swimming relay team

Four swimming stars from Our Lady"s Bower have been chosen as the winners of the Westmeath Independent sports star of the month award for February. Aoife Corry, Naomi Mullins, Emma Fahy and Eimear Corry won gold medals in two different relay events in the Irish Schools Championships, which were held in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin The quartet won the 4 X 50-metres senior freestyle relay and the senior medley relay in the championships last February. They had earlier won Connacht titles before progressing to the national finals. Aoife (16) and younger sister Eimear (14), of Barrymore, Athlone, are daughters of Mary and William Corry. Emma (16) is from Retreat, Athlone, and is a daughter of Mary and Eamon Fahy, while Westport native Naomi (16), a boarder at Our Lady"s Bower, is a daughter of Ann and Pat Mullins. The four Bower students are all members of Athlone Swimming Club, where they have benefited from the coaching of Johnny Powell. The principal of Our Lady"s Bower, Sr Denise O"Brien congratulated the girls on their achievements as the Athlone school continues to enjoy considerable success in the world of swimming. 'I am delighted Our Lady"s Bower has had great representation over the years with girls selected on the Irish Schools international teams. Jacqueline Mooney and Lisa Boland have represented the school abroad in previous years and this year we have two members from our school on the senior replay team, Emma Fahy and Aoife Corry, who represented Our Lady"s Bower in Swansea at the International Schools Gala,' said Sr Denise. 'I congratulate Aoife, Eimear, Emma and Naomi on their selection as February sports stars of the month. They earned this award and I look forward to their further successes.' The Bower swimmers, along with the other monthly award winners, will be honoured at a gala night at the Hodson Bay Hotel in early 2010.
