Young Lough Ree sailors win Western Championships

Killian Dickson and Peter Regan were among the winning teams in the 2009 Mirror Western Championship event. With over 40 boats competing in the Western Championships in Mullingar Sailing Club at Lough Owel recently, the Lough Ree Yacht Club are proud of their winning sailors. Five races were held in total, three on Saturday and two on Sunday, with the winning sailors having a clear-cut win, being first in three of the races and second in two. The result of the competition is achieved by a cumulative score of all five races. The mirror dinghy, a popular class in the club, equips young sailors with the opportunity and ability to learn tactical and crew relation skills that no other class can match to the same extent. The two sailors will represent Ireland with 20 other sailors in the World Nationals in Wales in two weeks' time. Also representing Lough Ree Yacht Club will be Cormac Dickson and Maeve Dickson who took third place in the 2009 Mirror Nationals recently held in the club. With over one hundred boats from all over the world entered in the World Championships, Lough Ree Yacht Club wishes the sailors well and expects them to be placed in the top twenty. "It is a phenomenal achievement for the club to have such accomplished young sailors who consistently achieve such high results in competition", said Eileen Brown, Commodore Lough Ree Yacht Club. "With a team effort from the club from trainers, parents, other mirror teams, all have worked together to produce such a winning team", she continued. "We are very proud of our young sailors and have an extensive junior fleet and winter and summer training programme in place for our young sailors at Lough Ree.
