Ballinasloe Notes
Death of traditional musician: East Galway lost one of its finest traditional musicians recently with the passing at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, of the late Mr. Michael Sonny Treacy. Mr. Treacy who came from Fahy, Kilconnell, Ballinasloe, was a former member of the famous Aughrim Slopes Céilí Band. He was also deeply involved in farming over the years. The deceased was also an active member of the Cappatagle G.A.A. Club. There was a large and representative attendance present at the Con-Celebrated Requiem Mass which took place at Kilconnell Church. A group of traditional musicians performed at his funeral Mass. Deepest sympathy is offered to his wife, Maureen, and other relatives. He will be long mourned. May he rest in peace. Surgical Conference An international gathering of surgeons will be held in the National University of Ireland, Galway, in early September to attend the Annual Sir Peter Freyer Memorial Conference. The 2009 Chairperson for this conference is Dr. Patrick Gullane who is a native of Main Street, Ballinasloe. Dr. Gullane is a past student of St. Joseph College, Garbally Park, and at the present time is the Head Surgeon at Princess Margaret Hospital at Toronto in Canada. Forthcoming Mission Arrangements have been made to hold a Parish Mission in Ahascragh and Caltra Churches from November 21st to November 28th. This mission will be conducted by priests from the Redemptarists Centre at Esker, Athenry, Co. Galway. Heritage Week The Nationwide 2009 Heritage Week will run from August 22nd to Sunday, August 30th. A large number of events will take place in East Galway and South Roscommon during this week. Heritage Week programme is supported by the National Heritage Council and Failte Ireland. Callows History Talks, walks and exhibition of memorabilia recalling the way of life of the people in Clonfert Callows will be held over this weekend at Clonfert Community Centre, Eyrecourt, Ballinasloe.
