History of Moate's Snowcream set to be launched
A new book recalling the 50-year history of Snowcream dairy in Moate will be launched next week. Snowcream (Midlands) Ltd. Moate - Memories recalls the 50-year history of the Moate business. Snowcream opened in 1958 and was a welcome addition to the town. It created a lot of employment over the years, peaking at over 150 workers. There were also 130 plus farmers supplying milk to the dairy at its peak. Sadly the plant closed its doors in 2001. This book was written and compiled by the Milk Producers Association, which still operates despite the fact their milk is now transported to Galway, rather than Moate. The book not only outlines the history of Snowcream Moate but also has personal memories and stories from staff and farmers alike. The book also includes a wide variety of old photographs, which will jog many memories. RTE sports broadcaster Colm Murray, a native of Moate, will perform the launch. Everyone is welcome, especially all former employees. Light refreshments will be served on the night. The launch of the above book will take place on Wednesday the 9th of December, in the Grand Hotel, Moate, at 8pm.
