O’Gorman murder file ready for DPP

Navan Gardai have confirmed that they are putting the finishing touches to a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the Martin O'Gorman murder case and it will be submitted by the end of this week. Mr O'Gorman, a native of Battery Road, Athlone died tragically on June 27 last in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, a week after he was the victim of a vicious assault in Navan. An extensive operation was launched by gardai to uncover what happened the quiet, gentle Athlone man. As part of the investigation, gardai arrested four people, two male teens, a juvenile and a prisoner from Mountjoy Prison for questioning in connection with the case, the first two directly in relation to the crime and the others about information relevant to the incident. All four were released without charge at the time. Although it had been thought the file would be complete during the summer it's believed there were a number of delays in sourcing information in terms of certain aspects of the case. “The file should be with the DPP by the end of the week,†Supt Michael Devine explained to the Westmeath Independent. “We are hopeful we will have a decision this side of Christmas.†The 63-year-old bachelor, known to his friends and family in Athlone simply as Mairt, had left a bar in the Meath town and was walking towards a 24-hour garage when he passed a group of people thought to be at a house party on Academy Street on June 21 last. He was later found next to the kerb by a local taxi driver at around 12.30am with serious head injuries. A week later, he passed away in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin in what's believed to have been a random attack by a gang as he made his way from a nearby bar to a petrol station for a coffee. At his funeral back in July, a loving picture was painted by his nephew Diarmuid of a deeply knowledgable GAA fan, a hard worker in the family business Midland Crane Hire Ltd, dry witted, thoughtful, private man, who was a big part of his family and loved by them all, particularly the children.
