Tradition and a fresh twist from Next's new collection

From hooded fisherman jackets in waxed fabrics and shawl-collared lambs wool knitwear to cinch-back chinos, from flat caps to sturdy round-toe brogues, Next's menswear collection for autumn/winter 2011 gives elements of sartorial tradition an intriguing new twist. In the milled and vintage-look fabrics chosen for its tailoring, the Heritage theme salutes the dapper gent. Think flannels and herringbone weaves in soft greys and browns - with flashes of florals and paisley-pattern in linings and pocket squares. Look out for shirts in Prince of Wales or Tattershall checks, and plain or knit ties - all in a rich autumnal palette of teal, burgundy and burnt orange. Mod Men revisits the early 1960s to inspire slim-fitting shirts in monochrome checks, ranging from small scale puppytooth to bold gingham, always styled with small button-down colars. Worn with skinny ties, neatly held in place with retro tie pins or clips, these provide the perfect complement for lean-cut tailoring. Something more relaxed? The Frat House story takes inspiration from every American Ivy League campus for its practical layers of off-track sportswear and relaxed loungewear. Think waffle tops over heavy-weight jersey joggers embellished with traditional collegiate motifs - all in shades of mulberry, navy and grey. The key outerwear option is the gillet, worn with hooded sweats or shirts in brushed cotton plaids. This season's all-important hooded fisherman jacket slots into the all-weather, all-terrain feel of the rugged Woodsman theme. Think tough fabrics such as heavy cotton drill, denim and utility poplin...think chinos, of course, but also cords. Brave the elements in great chill-beating knitwear. And find sure-footing in chunky-knit socks and tough hiking boots. Check out the Next menswear collection for autumn/winter at Next in Athlone Towncentre.
