Juicy fashion idea seals junk kouture award

Students of Our Lady's Bower swept the boards at the Western final of the ERP Junk Kouture fashion event. A team of Our Lady's Bower students and their orange peel creation 'Re'Jucin is Appealin' claimed the overall regional award for the West. Katie Brill, Emily Henshaw and Anna Keegan were then swept away to the Late Late Show where Katie, sporting the imaginative creation, was interviewed by Ryan Tubridy. Following weeks of regional finals around the country, 80 shortlisted finalists took to the stage to showcase their designs made from everyday waste materials ranging from orange peels and feathers to computer cabling, milk cartons and batteries. The judges, which included international designer Peter O'Brien, stylist and fashion journalist Angela Scanlon, London based designer Zoe Boomer and Head of Corporate Communications at ERP Ireland Yvonne Holmes had the difficult job of selecting the winner from the talented bunch of young eco designers. The other two teams making up the top three teams from the West were also from Our Lady's Bower and included Shauna Coffey, Megan Lynch and Aiveen Digby with their creation 'Eala Dubh' made from old CDs and feather and Emily Connell, Jane Henshaw and Liadh Beirne with their creation 'Shell Shocked' made from mussel and clam shells. 'Re'Jucin is Ap'pealin' also claimed one of the Glamour Awards and Katie will now attend a movie premiere in London later this year where she will walk the red carpet in her creation. The overall winner of the competition was Lady Data of Coláiste Bride School, Enniscorthy, which was commended for its creative and intelligent use of electrical waste. Modelled by Kelly Bolger and designed by Kelly, Michaela Doyle Murphy and Sarah Greene. ERP Junk Kouture Elizabeth O'Donnell said: "We congratulate all the finalists on their achievement. The ERP Junk Kouture competition offers students the opportunity to share their common love of design and fashion as well as celebrate their creative output. Perhaps more importantly, it also reminds them of the importance of re-using and recycling and finally re-designing!"
