Westmeath football manager Pat Flanagan.

More than one name in the frame for Westmeath manager job

A number of managers have expressed an interest in replacing Pat Flanagan at the helm of the Westmeath senior football squad according to Football Board secretary Gerry Coyne. After his side were narrowly defeated by Kerry in the Qualifiers many observers expected that Flanagan would be reinstalled, but his future was thrown into doubt when the board cancelled a meeting due to be held last week at which it was believed that his position was to be rubberstamped. Football Board secretary Gerry Coyne said that, before club delegates made any decision, they had to confirm that Mr Flanagan - who returns from holiday today (Wednesday, August 22) - is willing to sign up to the new GAA charter regarding the non-payment of managers. Once they ascertained his position, then they can proceed, Mr Coyne said. Asked if the Mr Flanagan will be reinstalled if he signs up to the charter, Mr Coyne said that he would then have to receive delegates' support. The secretary also confirmed that a "small" number of managers had voiced an interest in the position. He declined to reveal the identity of the interested parties.
