Flanagan's fate set to be decided this week

THE Westmeath GAA Football Board meets tomorrow night (Thursday) in a bid to finalise the positions of Westmeath senior and U21 managers for the 2013 season. Pat Flanagan, who has had two full years at the helm of both jobs, and the general consensus appears to be that he will again be rubber-stamped as county manager for next season, despite a significant show of support from some quarters within the county for the consideration of Luke Dempsey for the post. Some level of confusion surrounding Flanagan's reappointment surfaced when the Football Board cancelled a meeting scheduled for August 15. Flanagan's tenure had been up for its annual review, with the former Tyrrellspass supremo's handling of Westmeath's Allianz NFL Division 2 campaign - when they surprisingly survived the threat of relegation in a competitive division - not to mention the admirable display in the All-Ireland SFC Qualifier against Kerry, winning him no shortage of plaudits. Meanwhile, the Westmeath SFC quarter-final replay between Castledaly and Maryland, who drew last weekend, will take place at Cusack Park, Mullingar on Saturday, September 8 (5.30pm). The Westmeath SFC relegation play-off, between Killucan and St Malachy's, will take place beforehand at 4pm.
