Westmeath and Roscommon begin league with vital wins

THERE were valuable opening day wins for both Westmeath and Roscommon as the 2013 Allianz NFL kicked-off at the weekend. Pat Flanagan's Westmeath came from behind to ensure a 0-16 to 2-9 win over Louth at Cusack Park, Mullingar, despite the sending-off of Garrycastle stalwart Doron Harte (see full report in this week's Westmeath Independent). The Lake County's Division 2 campaign continues this coming Sunday with a trip to Longford. Meanwhile, in Division 3, Roscommon got off to a great start under new manager John Evans when beating Sligo by 1-11 to 1-8 at Dr Hyde Park (full report also in this week's Westmeath Independent). Roscommon's next game is away to Fermanagh on Saturday.
