Coping with stress in the run up to exams

As students all over the country ramp-up the study for end-of-term exams, junior and leaving certificate students, in particular, are being advised to build-in breaks and relaxation techniques to their revision schedules.
Mocks.ie, the online study and revision resource, has developed an Exam De-Stress Kit to help with exam nerves, and ensure mind and body are in peak condition ahead of the June 6 exams start.

Included in the kit are Rescue Remedy drops, night spray, and liquid melts as well as a combination of nutrients, including vitamin C, omega 3, and zinc which is  included to boost brain activity and help manage anxiety.  The packs, developed in conjunction with a leading pharmacy, also include study skills and exams preparation booklet along with some essential stationery and pens, and are available on www.mocks.ie, priced from €40, with €5 postage.

Students are advised to leave one day a revision free day. Guidance Counsellor Betty McLaughlin explained the importance of having regular breaks;

'An hour with friends, playing sport, or even in front of the TV every day is important, as well as eating a healthy diet, avoiding a big intake of stimulants like caffeine and sugar, and getting plenty of sleep.”

Even the most confident and capable student can suffer exam stress, the experienced guidance counsellor says. “A certain level of stress is ok, as it motivates us to concentrate on the task in hand.  Every student is different though, and copes differently, so parents need to talk to their children and check that stress levels do not reach a point where the student’s ability to cope is effected”, Betty McLaughlin said.

Exercise, meditation, and deep breathing are all helpful in physical and mental exam preparation, as is the practical advice to get organised with a timetable, and spread the revision work over the next six weeks, rather than cramming for exams the night beforehand.

Attempting old exam papers will help with summarising techniques and structuring answers, while also establishing the type of questions to expect, the timing required, and any gaps in the student’s knowledge.  Exam papers are available free on www.mocks.ie.
