McCabe's Tubberclair to meet Caulry in quarter-finals

TUBBERCLAIR are through to quarter-finals of this year’s Morgan Golf Westmeath IFC having beaten Shandonagh in the Section A play-off last night (Wednesday).

Martin McCabe’s side progressed to the knock-out stages courtesy of a 1-14 to 1-8 victory at Pairc Chiarain in Athlone. They will now face Caulry in the quarter-finals at Moate on Sunday (5pm).

The meeting of Caulry and Tubberclair will be a repeat of last year’s intermediate semi-final, which saw Caulry triumph on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-13. On that occasion, it was a very late goal by the Caulry midfielder Gary Flanagan which ultimately settled a closely contested match.

Staying with the intermediate championship, Kilbeggan Shamrocks will contest the relegation play-off against Ballinagore at Shandonagh on Friday evening (6.30pm), with both sides eager to maintain intermediate status after difficult campaigns in the group phase.

There will be three other big championship games of local interest this weekend involving Athlone, Castledaly, Garrycastle and Tang.

Tang will play St Malachy’s in the IFC quarter-finals at Cusack Park, Mullingar on Saturday (6.30pm), while the meeting of Castledaly and Garrycastle in Sunday’s SFC Section B play-off (for the right to play The Downs in the quarter-finals) will whet the appetite of local Gaels. They face off at Cusack Park in Mullingar on Sunday evening at 6.30pm.

Athlone are also in action as they come up against Tyrrellspass in the first of the SFC quarter-finals at Moate on Sunday (6.30pm).
