Weekend Sport: Brigid's lose Connacht crown

ST Brigid’s quest for a historic fourth successive Connacht club senior title came unstuck yesterday when they were defeated by Castlebar Mitchells at Dr Hyde Park.

The South Roscommon outfit led by five at half-time, but Mitchels roared back to lead by the same margin midway through the second half.

St Brigid’s turned matters around again and led by two, 2-11 to 3-6, entering injury time. However, Castlebar soared back into the contest and eventually won on a scoreline of 3-13 to 2-12 after extra-time.

Meanwhile, there were mixed fortunes for Athlone’s two remaining teams in the coveted FAI Junior Cup, with Willow Park crashing out at home to Moyne. St Peter’s had a penalty shoot-out win against Freebooters from Kilkenny (full match report in this week’s Westmeath Independent).

Athlone Town also officially unveiled their new manager Mick Cooke at a press conference on Saturday morning, details of which will also appear in this week’s paper.
