Local pointtopoint refixed

The annual South Westmeath Point-to-Point meting postponed last week due to inclement weather conditions has been rescheduled for Sunday afternoon, March 8.

Original entries will stand for the rescheduled event with a total of six races pencilled in to begin at 1pm. The Point-to-Point takes place at The Pigeons, Athlone. Races will take place every half hour from 1pm to 3.30pm. This year’s event is the 125th hosting of the South Westmeath Point-to-Point.

The opening race is for four-year-old Geldings and sponsored by Seamus & Imelda McCormack, The Three Jolly Pigeons, The Villager, Glasson, and Grogan’s Glasson. This is followed by the Groarke & Partners Solicitors five-year-old Geldings Maiden, and the Hugh Campbell & Co. Solicitors Mares Winner Of One. At 2,30pm, the Sean Dunning, Victualler and Frank Daly & Associates six-year-old+ Geldings Maiden takes place, followed by the Walderstown Service Station six-year-old+ Mares Maiden. The final race, which in the past has brought great success to local owner and trainer Tom Cleary, of Ballygowlan, Athlone, is the O’Rourke Brothers S.C.S.I. Confined Hunt Winners.
