Census figures show 3% population increase in Westmeath

Results from last year's census have revealed that Westmeath's population increased by 3% - or 2,606 people - between 2011 and 2016.

The Lake County had a population of 88,770 when the census was taken in April of last year.

The rate of population growth was more modest in neighbouring Roscommon, where it increased by 479 people - or 0.6% - during the five-year period.

Roscommon's population then stood at 64,544.

There are over 53,000 more females than males in Ireland, but Roscommon bucks the trend as it's one of only six counties in which males are in the majority. The 'Rossie' population included 210 more males than females.

The only other male-majority counties are Laois, Longford, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan.

That's one of the findings from last year's census, more details of which were revealed today.

Overall, Ireland's population grew by 3.8% since April 2011, to stand at at 4,761,865.

The total number of non-Irish nationals fell slightly to 535,475, or 11.6% of the population, and this was the first since decline since the introduction of this question in the 2002 census.

The number of people with dual-Irish nationality increased by 48,879 to 104,784 people since April 2011.
