Alexion staff lend a helping hand in Drum

FIFTY enthusiastic staff from Alexion Pharmaceuticals in Athlone did their bit for the community as they refurbished Drum Community Centre.

The staff took part in the project, as part of their company's Global Day of Service.

They painted, varnished and did some carpentry work at the community centre which is used by hundreds of people in the Drum community.

It's the third time that staff at Alexion in Athlone have undertaken a project of this nature. Two years ago they completed a project at St Hilda's, while last year they completed great work at the Simon Community.

Team captain of the Alexion staff Michael Doyle said everyone was delighted to get involved in the worthwhile project which was well received in Drum.

It's all about going out and sourcing a project and making the biggest difference that we can,” he said.

Drum Community Centre opened in 1988 and is used by up to 400 people on a weekly basis, from local clubs and schools to those attending bingo.

It needed a good tidy up, painting and light carpentry. Skirting boards and radiator covers were fixed,” said Michael.

Most of the work was done inside, with some work also carried out outside the hall.

He said that their involvement in the three projects in the past three years was beneficial for everyone.

They are all good causes. This one was a large room where everyone was working together. The idea is to find a location that will suit and that will benefit the community,” he explained.

The committee (in Drum) were blown away by the work. They were delighted,” he added.

Staff from all departments in Alexion took part in the project. “It is a great team-building event,” he said. “There were 35 places initially. There was such interest we added on another 15 places,” added Michael, who is a senior training specialist at Alexion.

Among those who took part was the plant manager Michael Teehan.

Plans are already underway for next year's project. “We will be reaching out again next year. I have already had conversations about potential places for next year,” he said. “It's a great opportunity and it's something that Alexion is committed to. People like to give something back.”
