Athlone's Chloe Singleton ... called up to the Ireland senior squad.

Singleton gets first call-up to Ireland senior squad

Chloe Singleton from Monksland was drafted into the Ireland senior women's squad earlier this week.

Singleton was called up for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 qualifier against Montenegro - after Glasgow City striker Clare Shine had to withdraw from the squad due to injury.

Having excelled for the Ireland U-19 team, Singleton's progress has now been recognised with a first call-up to the senior squad.

A former Bealnamulla player, Singleton has impressed since joining Galway WFC and she was chosen for a Women's National League Player of the Month award in September 2017.

The 18-year-old from Athlone can play as a defender or midfielder, with this versatility making her a valuable player at club and international level.

Last weekend, Ireland caretaker manager Tom O’Connor named a 20-player squad for the upcoming Euro 2021 Qualifier against Montenegro at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday, September 3 (kick-off 7.30pm). But the injury to Shine forced O'Connor into a change and opened the door for Singleton, who trained with the squad this week at Johnstown Estate in Enfield, Co. Meath.

Bealnamulla LFC has congratulated Chloe on her selection on the Ireland squad.

“Congratulations to former Bealnamulla LFC and current Galway WFC player Chloe Singleton on her call-up to the Ireland Women's senior squad. Fantastic achievement and we wish you the best of luck,” the club posted online

The Republic of Ireland squad also includes Ballinasloe native Heather Payne, who is now playing in the United States with Florida State University.

Ireland, who recorded a whopping 9-0 win over Montenegro in the last meeting between the sides, will also face Germany, Ukraine and Greece in their qualifying group.
