And these checks will continue, he added, saying they had also heard rumours of certain licensed premises flouting the request to stay shut, however, there was no evidence to support that.

 

Unlike other areas of the country, there have been no reports of large-scale gatherings or parties in the Athlone area since the coronavirus outbreak

 

“If people observe any large gatherings of any kind, please contact us. We haven't seen any evidence of a breach of the guidelines,” added Sgt Haran on Wednesday.

 

He confirmed that there will be patrolling parks and public areas as per usual to ensure social distancing guidelines are being observed.

 

Community gardai will also be calling to older and vulnerable people in the locality who need help, although many are being checked by neighbours and friends.

 

However, if there is someone who is living away and is worried about a relative or someone who may be isolated should get in touch as soon as possible.

 

“If anyone knows anyone who is isolated and doesn't have anyone attending to them, we'd be happy to hear from them,” Sgt Haran ended.
