RDFL decides to complete disrupted season

The Roscommon & District Football League (RDFL) has confirmed its intention to complete the 2019-20 season.

Like so many other sporting bodies, the RDFL saw their fixtures programme brought to a shuddering halt by the Covid-19 outbreak in March.

RDFL chairman Niall Kelly (pictured above) has explained that the league canvassed clubs to ascertain if they wished to apply to complete the season or have it declared 'null and void'.

It has emerged that the majority of clubs are in favour of applying to complete the season within a window from August 28 to October 11, as advised by the FAI steering committee.

Mr Kelly thanked all the clubs for giving their views, and said the application to complete the season will be made in the coming week.

"We wish all our clubs, sponsors and stakeholders a safe passage through this pandemic," he added.

Two clubs are in contention for this season's RDFL Premier Division title - holders St Peter's and Castlerea Celtic. They were due to meet in a title decider at McCarthy Park in Athlone before the Covid-19 pandemic caused the sporting shutdown.

St Peter's need to win to retain their crown but a draw would be enough for Castlerea to secure the title.
