'Staycation' sun looking doubtful for bank holiday weekend

It's an August bank holiday in which more Irish residents will be holidaying at home than usual, but unfortunately it looks like we won't need to reach for the sunscreen too often over the course of the weekend.

The weather is set to get significantly warmer and more humid as this week goes on, but the indications are that a break in the weather will occur on Friday, with cooler conditions prevailing over the following days.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) will bring outbreaks of rain later in the day, and it will then turn quite warm overnight, with sticky temperatures in the order of 14 to 17 degrees.

Thursday will be warm, humid, breezy and generally dry as temperatures climb into the low-20s in many parts of the country.

Met Eireann expects Friday to again be much warmer than recent weeks, with temperatures ranging between 19 and 24 degrees. However, it looks like a spell of rain will arrive later on Friday and herald the end of the warm spell with cooler conditions in store for the remainder of the weekend.

Cathal Nolan, from Ireland's Weather Channel on Facebook, summed up the outlook by saying: "Our weather is set to become much warmer for a time, however that change to warmer weather will only last between Thursday and Friday before cooler, fresher weather from the Atlantic arrives through Friday night, making for a mixed bank holiday weekend."

Happily, Cathal expects that the weekend "won't be all doom and gloom" as "some areas will see drier interludes".
