Long-serving Garda retires

A Garda who resides in South Roscommon has retired.

Garda Mark Connell retired from An Garda Siochana on Friday after serving for 24 years at Cloghan Garda Station in Offaly.

An Garda Síochána in Laois and Offaly paid tribute to Garda Connell and to his colleague, Garda Willie Whelan, Portlaoise, who also retired recently.

“Both men served their communities with distinction. Regularly going beyond the call of duty," a spokeperson said.

Garda Connell said he wanted to thank the communities of Cloghan and Belmont and the surrounding area of Birr Garda District for their support to him over the last 24 years at Cloghan Garda Station.

“Without the support of the people, An Garda Siochana would struggle to provide the service that is required and expected by our communities.

“I was very fortunate and privileged to have been stationed at Cloghan Garda Station and be your Garda and be among such fine people. I appreciated the support that I received from the various groups and associations within our community.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all good health and happiness in the future.”
