Eel fishing warning after nets seized

Inland Fisheries Ireland has issued a stern warning this week about illegal eel fishing in Lough Ree and the Shannon, which they say poses a threat to the conservation of indigenous fish species.

It follows the recent seizure of several double-ended fyke nets at various locations on the lake and the Shannon near Lanesboro. Several live eels were released from the nets, while dead disintegrating fish and animal bones were also discovered.

A spokesperson for Inland Fisheries Ireland said the seizures resulted from both routine patrols on the lake and from reports from anglers.

"These illegal nets are deployed on the lake or river bed and tend to target eels as the eels feed on the lake or river bed. They may also trap other fish species, mammals (otter) and diving birds."

Since 2009, commercial and recreational fishing for eels has been banned in Ireland as part of Ireland’s response to dramatic declines in eel recruitment.

"This illegal activity potentially poses a serious threat to the conservation of this indigenous fish species and all suspicious activity should be reported to Inland Fisheries Ireland at 1890 3474 24."
