Chilly and unsettled weather expected in coming days

The country is facing a spell of unsettled weather over the coming days, with temperatures cooler than normal for this time of year.

Today (Wednesday) showers have been spreading eastwards across the country, but in the Midlands and East the rain will die out overnight.

It will be a cold night, of between 1 and 5 degrees Celsius, with some frost possible.

Met Eireann expects tomorrow (Thursday) to get off to a chilly start, and the day will bring a mixture of sunshine, heavy showers, and isolated thunderstorms in some areas. Temperatures will again be cool and won't rise above 12 degrees.

Showers are likely to affect parts of Leinster on Friday morning, but the remainder of the day should be dry in most places with top temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees.

At the moment it looks like we're in for a wet, windy and unsettled weekend, with heavy rain spreading from the North-East on Saturday and persisting in some areas on Sunday.

Temperatures will remain relatively low, with highs of just 13 to 14 degrees over the weekend.
