The long-awaited completion of drainage works on the Assumption Road in Athlone has been warmly welcomed by local Fianna Fail Cllr, and Town Mayor, Aengus O'Rourke.

The works, which involved a robust drainage plan for the back lane which runs between the new Esker Park housing development and the back gardens of Assumption Road, will greatly reduce flooding in the area, according to Cllr O'Rourke.

"For several years now a number of houses on the eastern side of Assumption Road have experienced considerable flooding of their back gardens in winter time,. with resting water reaching levels more than twelve inches two years ago" he said.

Having rejected a plan to carry out temporary works in the area, which was first mooted in 2018, Cllr O'Rourke says he pressed Westmeath County Council to carry out major drainage works in an effort to solve the problem on a permanent basis.

With the help of Paul Hogan, Council Architect and District Engineer Pat Nally, we came up with a robust drainage plan for the area, and I am satisfied that this drainage work will greatly reduce the risk of flooding going forward. I would also like to thank the residents of Assumption Road for their cooperation and patience in this matter" said Mayor O'Rourke.
