Garda 'Slow Down' operation finds car 15km over speed limit in Athlone today

The Gardai are conducting a national speed enforcement operation, "Slow Down”, for a 24-hour period from 7am this morning until 7am tomorrow (Saturday)

During the first two hours, An Garda Síochána and GoSafe checked the speed of 23,275 vehicles and detected 128 vehicles (0.5%) travelling over the speed limit.

One of the vehicles found to be exceeding the limit this morning, was travelling at 65km per hour in a 50km zone on the R446 at Bonnavally, Athlone.

On the R680 Cork Road, in Waterford, a vehicle was detected at a whopping 97km per hour in a 50km zone before 9am this morning.

The Gardai continue to appeal to drivers to improve their compliance with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on our roads.

In 2019 there were 140 road deaths, with excessive speed a contributory factor in approximately one-third of fatal collisions.

High-visibility speed checks will continued to be be carried out across 1,300 speed enforcement zones nationally today.

An additional 80 speed detection devices have been rolled out for use as part of this operation, with a further 70 devices to be rolled out prior to year-end.
