Athlone hockey trio called up to Connacht squads

Three players from Athlone Hockey Club have been chosen to represent Connacht at interprovincial level.

Megan Clinton and Erika Lowe have been selected at U-18 level, while Sally O’Hara has been called up to the Connacht U-16 squad.

Megan has played in three previous interprovincial tournaments, representing her province at the U-16 and U-18 age groups. Erika previously played at U-16 level and has now stepped up to the next age grade.

This is Sally’s first year at U-16 level and club coaches believe she has the ability to represent Connacht for years to come.

The club has extended huge congratulations to the trio. “All three girls have shown great dedication and determination to make it to the final squads. Well done girls; we are very proud of you. The path to selection is tough and can be disappointing for many,” said a club spokesperson.

The club also acknowledged the efforts of many players who were on the development squads and who went for trials.

The interprovincial tournament that was originally to be played over the midterm break in October was unfortunately postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions, with no future date set as yet. However, the squads trained up until taking a break for Christmas.

Athlone Hockey Club said it is hugely grateful to the volunteer coaches and managers of both U-16 and U-18 interpro teams who “work selflessly” for the good of Connacht hockey. The club is also thankful to its own coaches and to those who coach in local schools.
