New HSE service in Roscommon aims to help smokers quit for good

Smokers in Roscommon who are trying to quit will have the opportunity to be paired with a 'stop smoking advisor' for support as part of a new HSE West initiative.

The free Quit Smoking West service is being provided by the HSE's Health Promotion & Improvement Team in counties Roscommon, Galway and Mayo.

"Lent provides us with the perfect opportunity to take up this challenge," said a HSE spokesperson.

"With our support, you can stop smoking for 28 days, and then you are five times more likely to quit for good. We know that quitting is a tough journey because nicotine is an extremely addictive substance.

"However, by working with us we will develop a plan and a routine that will enable you to cope with cravings and withdrawal symptoms."

Under the programme, a member of the HSE Quit Smoking West team will provide advice in relation to using stop smoking medication.

The programme involves chatting with an experienced team member each week for one session, over a six week period, to provide the support needed to deal with the challenges of quitting.

One ex-smoker said, "Availing of this service was so supportive for me, it allowed me to develop a strong attitude and to focus on how to cope with cravings and high risk situations. I have not smoked in over two months and I feel fantastic."

If you are thinking about quitting, you can call the Quit Smoking West service, covering Galway, Mayo and Roscommon on 091 737262, or email quitsmoking.west@hse.ie.

You will be matched with a 'stop smoking advisor' in your area that can support you by telephone, online, by smartphone or computer, whichever suits you best.
