Moran calls for vigilance after 'terrible' illegal dumping in Garrycastle

Athlone councillor Jamie Moran has called on locals to be vigilant following some disgraceful illegal dumping in the Garrycastle area.

Cllr Moran received complaints about the large volume of rubbish dumped on the road behind the ESB site in Garrycastle, and he believes a number of people may have been involved in the incident.

He shared a shocking picture (above) showing a mattress, wooden boxes, and various household items that had been discarded on the road known locally as the Molly Conway Road.

"It's such a large amount of rubbish that it's not just one person doing this - it has to be a number of people," he said.

"It is terrible to think people would go into other areas of the town and dump. I'm going to raise this with the Town Engineer and the Director of Services.

"I'm asking the people who use this area to be vigilant to see how we can stop this. One idea that was brought to me was maybe getting a gate put there, other people have suggested a stile.

"I do know a lot of people walk this area as it is leading on to the greenway and it is a scenic area, but it's not a scenic area today.

"It's not fair for the people living in the area and it's not fair to people that walk in the area and see this every single day.

"I'm going to take this up with the Town Engineer straight away, as something has to be done about it fast. If anyone has any suggestions please contact me," he concluded.
