Athlone road closures to facilitate work on cycleway links

A road in urban Athlone is to be closed for almost two weeks to facilitate work that's being carried out as part of the extension of the town's cycleway.

Westmeath County Council announced that a section of the Coosan Point Road will be closed to traffic from Monday, May 24, to Saturday, June, 5, to allow work take place on the underbridge at the Coosan Point Road.

The L4005 (Coosan Point Road) will be closed from the junction with the L40054, Auburn Drive, to the junction of L40054, Auburn Terrace.

The council has advised motorists of two alternative routes for the duration of the road closure.

Northbound traffic travelling along the L4005 will be diverted at the junction of the L4011, Southern Station Road, via Southern Station Road and the Ballymahon Road to the Coosan Point Road roundabout at Arcadia.

All traffic travelling southbound will be diverted via the Coosan Point Road roundabout at Arcadia to the Ballymahon Road and Southern Station Road.

The council is hoping to have the extension of the cycleway - from the White Gates at the Ballymahon Road to Athlone Marina - open to the public by the August Bank Holiday.
