Tributes paid to popular local couple after fire tragedy

Tributes are being paid to the popular South Roscommon couple who lost their lives in a horrific house fire early yesterday.

Locals Joey Tumulty, in his 50s, and Nuala Kenny, in her 40s, both died in the house fire at Gurth na Sharvogue, near Ballydangan.

It's understood that Mr Tumulty was originally from the area where the fire occurred while Ms Kenny was a native of nearby Cappaleitra, which is also in the parish of Moore. Both of the deceased were parents.

Mr Tumulty had worked for the John Murray agricultural supplies business in Ballinasloe, while Ms Kenny had worked in healthcare.

In an online tribute, Kevin Murray of John Murray agricultural supplies in Ballinasloe said everyone was "shocked and saddened at the tragic passing of our dear friend and colleague, Joey, and his partner Nuala.

"The Tumulty family have a long association with the business and we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Mary, David and all the Tumultys," he said.

"We will miss Joey, his infectious laugh and his warm smile. May both Joey and Nuala rest in peace."

Local councillor John Keogh said both of the deceased were "well-known and respected" in the locality.

"Our community in South Roscommon is in shock today with the very sad and tragic news that Joey Tumulty and Nuala Kenny who were living in Moore, South Roscommon, lost their lives in a house fire," he stated.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joey’s children and Nuala’s children, the extended Tumulty and Kenny families, their many relatives in South Roscommon and beyond, and Joey and Nuala’s many friends."

Ballinasloe-based Senator Aisling Dolan described the deaths as "such a tragic loss" and expressed her sympathies to the families and friends, saying her thoughts were with them at this difficult time.

Gardai were notified of the fire at 2am on Thursday. It was brought under control by firefighters from Athlone, Ballinasloe and Roscommon, but both of the deceased were pronounced dead at the scene.

The two bodies were removed yesterday and taken to Galway University Hospital for post mortems to be carried out.
