RDFL declares season ‘null and void’ and plans ahead

The Roscommon and District Football League has declared the 2020/2021 season null and void, with the Covid-enforced lockdown having prevented games from taking place for several months.

“The committee of the Roscommon and District League have had a number of Zoom meetings in recent times with a view to getting back to playing football in a few weeks’ time. The season 2020/21 was declared null and void with the few games played being ignored,” said a RDFL statement.

With teams now allowed to resume training, games can now go ahead from June 7.

And the RDFL is planning to organise a competition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the league’s formation. This competition will run from early June until the end of July.

“While the details have yet to be finalised, it is expected that teams who enter the competition will be divided into groups based on what division they previously played in and also where they are located. It is proposed the top two teams in each group will play for the 50th Anniversary Cup. The next two teams will compete in the Shield competition and the remaining teams in a Plate competition,” said the RDFL.

Last season’s entry fees and fees for FAI registration will cover teams for the coming season. It is proposed to hold the Roscommon and District League AGM at the end of June and to start the 2021/22 season in early August.

The Masters League (over-35s) will also start in June and this season will see a change in who can play in this competition. Any player who has signed for a club’s first or second team cannot play in this season’s Masters League.

The make-up of the divisions for the coming season has been discussed, with the idea of having an eight-team Super League under consideration.

“Clubs should give some serious thought to the idea as it’s likely to be an item on the agenda at this season’s AGM,” added a RFDL spokesperson.
