Return of paediatric diabetic services at Mullingar Hospital welcomed

Families who have been calling for the resumption of the paediatric diabetes service at Mullingar Hospital finally got a welcome answer with news they will resume this week.

Sinn Fein TD for Meath West Johnny Guirke has welcomed the news from Professor Michael O'Grady adding that earlier announcements that the service was to stop had been a "devastating blow to everyone attending these clinics, and an unwanted headache for families as they were told that they also had to attend other clinics further away from their homes."

The outpatients Clinic will reopen on 1st June and newly diagnosed patients with diabetes will also be welcomed into the service and insulin pumps also resume.

"I am happy to hear that a Paediatric Diabetes Nurse practitioner has now been put in place with Ms Niamh O’Rourke taking up the post, and a new Senior dietician will begin from June 14th. More appointments will also come over the coming months which will only enhance this service.

"The parent’s group that contacted my office throughout this should also be praised for their endeavours, they never took no for an answer and this is brilliant news for all those concerned and no more than they deserve."
