Athleague fire victim to be laid to rest on Monday

The victim of Thursday morning's fatal fire in Athleague will be laid to rest on Monday.

She has been named Noreen Flanagan, No 8 An Graig, Athleague, Co Roscommon and formerly of Toberkeagh, Athleague.

Popular in the local community and from a well known family, there has been shock and sadness in the area since the news of her untimely passing filtered out.

Athleague Tidy Towns extended their condolences to the Flanagan family on their Facebook page, as did scores of others via the online condolence section on the rip.ie website.

Noreen's funeral mass takes place in St Patrick's Church, Athleague, on Monday at 11am. Burial will take place afterwards in Athleague Cemetery.

Gardaí were alerted around 7am on Thursday after a neighbour spotted smoke coming from the house.

Officers and fire services rushed to the scene, however, unfortunately, Noreen was pronounced dead a short time later.

She was the sole occupant of the house at the time.

A forensic examination of the scene was undertaken and the gardai say they are treating the fire as a tragic accident.

A post-mortem took place on Thursday in Galway.

Roscommon gardai said investigations are continuing to determine what caused the blaze.

Noreen Flanagan is the beloved daughter of the late Paddy and Norah. She is sadly missed by her brothers Padraig and Frank, sisters Margaret, Mary and Ann, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives, friends and her caring, kind neighbours.
