Mount Temple hosting professional golf tournament today

Mount Temple Golf & Country Club is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) are running a two-day event on the course this week.

Today (Wednesday, August 25), a PGA championship event is taking place, for a substantial sponsored prize fund of €16,000 and the Willie Nolan Trophy.

This event is one of the most important of the PGA calendar for 2021.

All the top Irish club professionals will be taking part, such as Damien McGrane among others.

The extended golf course which the professionals will be playing is the one which 2019 Open Championship winner Shane Lowry, shot a score of 67 as an amateur in 2007.

Over the past 14 years the quality and standards of the golf course and also golf technology has changed substantially, and it will be very interesting to see how this shows on scores in the PGA championship event

The main sponsor for this event is Marsh Nissan group based in Athlone and Tullamore, along with Mount Temple Golf & Country Club.

The first day of the event was a Pro-Am competition which was held yesterday (Tuesday). It involved three amateurs and one professional playing with substantial sponsored team prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Nearest the Pin and Longest Drives prizes were sponsored by Pro-Golf Ireland, Centra Moate, Mark Nestor Property Services, Wineport, Tullamore Dew and Entegro.

The unique site on which the Mount Temple course was established made it possible to build a traditional championship course on its sand based esker hills, which allows golf to be played at a high standard all year round. Great views of over 100km can be seen from different areas of the course. Over the past 30 years a large amount of competitive and leisure golf has been played at the course by golfers from all over the world.

The golf course has been developing its course and all its facilities, which include a golf academy and driving range, with a professional in attendance, making it a high-class attraction to visit for golf enthusiasts.

The hosting of this major PGA event at Mount Temple Golf Club also emphasises the importance of golf to the Hidden Heartlands region.
