Lowry gets nod for Ryder Cup debut

Shane Lowry has been named as a wildcard pick for Europe's Ryder Cup team by captain Padraig Harrington.

Lowry failed to nail down one of the nine automatic spots at the conclusion of the BMW PGA Championship today but was announced tonight along with Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter as part of Europe's 12-man team for the competition.

Harrington, in announcing his three extra picks tonight, said Lowry was a “big time player who delivers consistency under pressure”.

“Shane has been the name right on the edge and he has performed well over the summer under that pressure.”

He also highlighted Lowry's suitability for the Whistling Straits course.

“He is well suited to the team environment, there’s plenty of players in the team who are looking to play with Shane. Good consistent form has brought him to this position,” Harrington said.

Lowry joins Rory McIlroy in the Irish contingent on the playing team.

The full team is Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Bernd Wiesberger, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey, Matt Fitzpatrick, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Shane Lowry and Ian Poulter.

The Ryder Cup takes place in Whistling Straits, Wisconsin from September 24 to 26.
