Local farmers help Hooves for Hospice at Ballymahon Mart

One of the largest Hooves for Hospice sales to date took place on Thursday last, at Ballymahon Mart, where 15 animals donated by local farmers were sold for more than €15,000.

Eight of the animals were from the Gowing Forward Group (farmers from the Moate area organised by Bernard Maxwell), six from Hereford Prime and one from Longford Westmeath businessman Christy Maye.

William Jones, manager, Ballymahon Mart; Christy Maye, Greville Arms Hotel (sponsor of a bottle of whiskey for each animal purchaser); Michael Cleary, Hereford Prime; Pat Lalor, Hooves 4 Hospice chairman, receiving a donation from Jimmy Magee, Athlone businessman.

Lions Clubs in the midlands have joined forces with the farming community, supportive organisations and individuals in a fundraising project, named ‘Hooves for Hospice’ that has the potential to raise a sizable sum of money towards the cost of building the midland regional hospice.

Pat Lalor, chairman Hooves for Hospice, thanked all the farmers involved for their support and generosity towards the project; William Jones, manager, and staff of Ballymahon Mart for their assistance and co-operation with the sale.

To add to the occasion, the Maye family and The Greville Arms Hotel, sponsored a bottle of whiskey for each of the buyers.
