Clann and Pearses to meet in Roscommon football final

Clann na Gael and Padraig Pearses will meet in the 2021 Roscommon Senior Football Championship final on Sunday, October 31.

Both sides came through semi finals over the weekend at Hyde Park to secure their final berths.

Pearses overcame St Brigid’s in a high octane clash on Saturday, prevailing by 0-18 to 2-10 and thereby eliminating the reigning champions.

Both sides had a player red-carded in an opening half, in which Brigid’s netted two goals through Paul McGrath and Ben O’Carroll but were still only level 2-3 to 0-9.

Three successive Conor Payne points in the opening minutes of the second half gave Pearses an early advantage but St Brigid’s had reeled them back by the 44th minute and were actually two points ahead at the water break, 2-9 to 0-13.

But Pearses reeled off five points in the final quarter to hold a three point advantage in injury time before Brigid’s registered their only score of the fourth quarter deep in injury time.

On Sunday, Clann held a narrow two-point advantage over Roscommon Gaels at the interval, 0-8 to 0-6 and while Roscommon Gaels reduced the deficit to one point at various stages, they were never able to level matters or edge in front. Three points in the final ten minutes (two from Ciaran Lennon and one from Ultan Harney) ensured victory for Clann on a score of 0-14 to 0-10.
