RTE's Nationwide show to focus on Jadotville this evening

This evening's episode of Nationwide on RTÉ One will focus on the Siege of Jadotville, 60 years on.

Some 156 Irish peacekeeping troops, many from Athlone, Mullingar and other parts of the Midlands, came under attack during the conflict in the Congo in September 1961.

In the Nationwide episode, Donal Byrne will recount the story of the battle and outline why the UN sought Irish involvement in the Congo crisis.

He will also explain why, six decades later, there is still "a sense of injustice on the part of some campaigners that the bravery of some of those who took part in that battle has never been properly recognised."

* Nationwide will air on RTÉ One this evening (Wednesday, October 20), at 7pm.
