Another night of Athlone water restrictions ahead due to repairs at plant

Thousands of residents across east Athlone are facing into a second successive night of water supply restrictions due to a mechanical issue at the town's water treatment plant.

Water supplies were affected across a large area extending from the town centre as far east as Mount Temple last night, and Irish Water said supply restrictions would again be imposed tonight (Wednesday, October 27) from 10pm to 6am.

An Irish Water statement said the mechanical issue at the plant became apparent yesterday, and that crews have been working to complete the repairs "as quickly and as efficiently as possible."

It added that, while progress was being made, "a further overnight restriction is necessary to protect water levels in the local reservoir and ensure customers have enough water to supply their homes and businesses during the daytime."

The areas affected include Athlone Town, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley and surrounding areas.

Irish Water added that some homes and businesses may experience intermittent low pressure while the repair works are continuing.

"This restriction is necessary to safeguard daytime water supply for all homes and business in Athlone and surrounding areas," said John Gavin, Regional Operations Lead with Irish Water.

"Repairs are progressing and are being conducted as quickly and as efficiently as possible at the water treatment plant.

"Irish Water understands the inconvenience night-time restrictions can have on customers and it appreciates customers' patience as we work to complete the repairs and restore normal water supply to all customers," he said.
