Athlone Christmas Market to take place over two weekends

The Athlone Christmas Market is scheduled to take place over two weekends in Athlone Civic Square on Saturday and Sunday, December 11 and 12 and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 17, 18 and 19.

Again, the attractive timber market cabins secured by the Athlone Festival & Events Project Group two years ago will be provided for the traders. These cabins create a marvellous festive atmosphere and uniformity which will complement the fantastic range of products that will be on sale by local traders from both the Athlone and wider district areas.

Cllr Frankie Keena who is co-organising this Christmas Market with the Athlone Chamber stated that there will be twelve market stalls in total provided this year and most importantly they will all be utilised by local traders.

He said the area was fortunate to have so many local traders all producing a fabulous range of gifts for everyone’s taste.

The cabins will stretch from the Canopy on Church Street down towards the Post Office. All traders will have hand sanitiser on their stalls available for public use and appropriate signage will be erected along the route.

In thanking Westmeath County Council for its generous financial support towards the running costs for the market, Cllr Keena said he hopes the public will come along and support local traders and at the same time pick up that Christmas bargain.

Gerry McInerney from Athlone Chamber of Commerce said that following the success of last year’s market there is a big demand for stalls this year.

“We are delighted that the market is fully booked out for the five days and we do hope that people will shop local and give the traders support,” he said.

Examples of the products that will be on sale range from handmade pieces of art using pebbles, handmade chocolates, handmade waxy melts & candles, personalised prints, Christmas garlands and candles, natural honey, scented candles and skincare creams. There will also be an opportunity to get your Christmas puddings, mince pies, teas and coffees.

The Midlands Polish Community is also hosting a musical extravaganza on Saturday, December 18, in the Civic Square. This group has marvellous experience in organising such events.
