Local LGFA clubs finish year on a high

Goldsmiths, Garrycastle, St Joseph's and Athlone all won Westmeath LGFA minor county titles recently.

Goldsmiths (a combination of Tubberclair, Maryland and Tang) won the Division 1 minor crown with a thrilling victory over Coralstown/Kinnegad, 4-12 to 3-10 after extra-time.

Their goals were scored by Emma Tumelty, Rebecca Higgins, Gemma Guinane and team captain Leah Duffy, while Sinead Seery excelled at midfield and contributed five points. Goldsmiths fought back from nine points down early in the second half to secure a draw before prevailing in extra-time at Lakepoint Park, Mullingar.

In the Division 2 final, a superb individual display by Garrycastle attacker Shannon Mulvihill was the main talking point as her side defeated Killucan in an entertaining and high-scoring decider.

Garrycastle captain Mulvihill, as evidenced by her astonishing individual haul of 6-9, was to the fore from start to finish. Final score: Garrycastle 6-13 Killucan 5-4.

In the Division 3 decider, St Joseph’s justified their favouritism with a comfortable victory over Loughnavalley at a wet and windy Ballymore. Final score: St Joseph’s 2-9 Loughnavalley 1-2.

The Streamstown-based club led from pillar to post as they repeated their earlier victory over their neighbours in difficult conditions. Roisin Kealy and Caoilinn Elliffe scored 2-5 between them in a game where the result was never really in much doubt.

In an entertaining Division 5 final, Athlone had to withstand a spirited rally from Cill Óige at St Kieran's Park, Castledaly.

The two teams combined to warm the hearts of the spectators in chilly but dry conditions. Overall, Athlone were the better team, but Cill Óige were just a single point adrift with a couple of minutes remaining. Final score: Athlone 2-10 Cill Óige 2-8.

Lucy Brett and lively substitute Ciara Murphy scored the goals for Athlone (with Ava Martin and Grace McGlynn also impressing in attack), while Amanda Collins and Hazel Kelly found the net for Cill Óige.
