Vigil in memory of Ashling Murphy to be held in Athlone on Sunday

A vigil in memory of Tullamore woman Ashling Murphy who died after being attacked whilst out running beside the Grand Canal on Wednesday afternoon is to take place in Athlone on Sunday.

It is one of countless such events being organised around the country as people unite to express their sympathy to the Murphy family and their abhorrence at the incident and at attacks on women.

The Athlone event will take place at 4pm on Sunday. Participants are asked to gather at the Garrycastle entrance to the green way and to walk to the White Gates and back.

People are asked to socially distance and wear masks.
