The late Michael Fuery.

Exhibition of work of late Athlone photographer

'Wonder' is the latest photography exhibition to be hosted in the Golden Island Shopping Centre exhibition space displaying the work of the late and much loved Athlone man Michael Fuery.

The exhibition was opened on Friday last by Michael Cawley and was attended by Michael's family and friends.

Michael Fuery was a native of Iona Park in Athlone but lived most of his life in Glasson. He worked in Athlone Extrusions for 33 years. When he retired, in his early 50s, he headed up the charity ’Athlone Community Taskforce’ for more than 10 years. He oversaw the renovation of St Mary’s hall and then the creation of the Gateway Project and Youth Café.

The work exhibited includes many of the images Michael chose to become distinguished as a Licentiate of the Irish Photographic Federation and also to become a Bronze Medal award winner in their National Championships.

Juliene Fuery and family members Jean Fuery, Tom Fuery and Sile Fuery with grandchildren April, Emily and Sarah.

Michael Cawley spoke of photographic work as making memories and getting to the soul of the subject which is very much reflected in this body of work. He also noted how Fuery's pride for his local area and visual awareness also shines through in his local images of Athlone, Portlick and Glasson.

Michael's wife Juliene spoke of his endless patience to his craft and the sense of ‘’Wonder’’ he found in everything from a glass of wine lit in many ways, to a tree, a lake, mountains and nature itself. She hoped those attending the exhibition would get a touch of that wonder and share in some of the joy that Michael revealed through his photography.

The exhibition will continue until March
