Local man dies tragically in New Zealand

The death has been announced of a South Roscommon man who was tragically killed in a traffic collision in New Zealand.

Declan Curley of Clonark, Athlone is sadly missed by his heartbroken parents Tommy and Rena (nee Ganly) his partner Sam and her daughter Mia, aunts, uncles, cousins and a wide circle of friends both in Ireland and New Zealand.

His death occurred when, as a pedestrian, he was struck by a vehicle on Dixon Street in Wellington in the early hours of Saturday morning last. An appeal for witnesses was issued by the police in Wellington following the tragedy.

Clann na nGael GAA is among those paying tribute to Declan today.

"It is with deep regret and sadness that the club has learned of the untimely and tragic passing of Declan Curley.

"Declan played underage football with Clann na nGael and followed the progress of Clann and his beloved Roscommon with great interest," said the GAA club as it extended its condolences to his family, friends and neighbours.

The Curley family have expressed their gratitude to the Irish community in New Zealand.

Their house is strictly private, and funeral arrangements will be made later.
