Keena asks festival supporters to show solidarity with Ukraine

The upcoming Croí na hEireann Festival and St Patrick's Day Parade in Athlone will be an ideal opportunity for members of the public to show solidarity with Ukraine as they try to defend their country from Russia’s illegal invasion.

That's according to Cllr Frankie Keena, Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, who said that the forthcoming festival in Athlone will provide entertainment for all ages which should give people a lift after lockdown.

"We are so grateful to the many musicians, community and sporting groups who have committed to putting on fantastic events and displays throughout the town during the festival. Also, the St Patrick’s Day Parade is on March 20 at 2pm and I can confirm that everyone is in for a fantastic surprise with a wide variety of amazing floats and entries," he said.

"As always it will be fantastic to see thousands of people lining the streets of the town for the parade waving the tricolour and wearing green, white and gold emblems. The bunting was erected last weekend and therefore the stage is now set for a great festival and parade. Fingers crossed the weather will hold," he added.

"This parade will also be an ideal opportunity for members of the public to show solidarity to Ukraine as they try to defend their country from Russia’s illegal invasion. Ireland has always been to the forefront on a humanitarian level in giving assistance to countries and now the Ukrainian people need our support. So, if people get an opportunity, please also bring along some Ukrainian blue and yellow flags to showcase the strong support from the Irish community towards Ukraine," he concluded.
