Athlone AC to run 4000km - Kevin Bell Trust to benefit

Athlone Athletics Club is preparing to embark on a fundraising challenge this weekend - which will benefit both the club and the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

From this Saturday, April 2 until April 9, club members are hoping to collectively cover a distance of 4000 kilometres.

The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the bodies of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland.

In January 2020, Eela and James Carr, two longstanding members of the club were the beneficiaries of these services following the tragic passing of their son and brother, John Carr from Moydrum, Athlone.

Club members or those who wish to support the venture can donate via a dedicated GoFundMe page.

"Athlone Athletics Club is proud to have the opportunity to raise funds for such a service. If you are in a position to make a small donation, we would be very appreciative. If not, maybe you can share our link to encourage awareness for others," said a spokesperson for the club.

The club trains at Technological University of the Shannon, Midlands (formerly Athlone Institute of Technology) and has large number of members of varying abilities.

Athlone AC members are due to meet on Saturday at 9.15am at Spar, Garrycastle and people can run any distance they like. The group will meet for refreshments at 11am back at the Spar shop. Club members are encouraged to wear club gear if possible. While some members will run on the day, others will walk or cycle.

Members are asked to report their mileage by texting the phone number circulated on the club's WhatsApp group.

If things go well, it is hoped that the target distance can be reached by Friday, April 8, so members can put their feet up on April 9 ahead of a planned night out in the Bounty!
