Local theatre raises over €2,000 for Ukraine appeals

To show solidarity with the people of Ukraine, Athlone Little Theatre kindly donated the full proceeds of their opening night of 'Duet for One' by Tom Kempinksi on Thursday last (April 7) to three appeals assisting people from the war-stricken country.

The committee is delighted to announce that a total of €2,075 was raised on the first night which will be divided between Red Cross, UNHCR and the recent local Ukraine orphanage run.

Massive thanks to all who supported the opening night, donating great raffle prizes, buying tickets and attending a night of great theatre for such a deserving cause.

It was a double treat for attendees, who as well as supporting the people of Ukraine, got to enjoy what's been described by some observers as one of the finest pieces of theatre Athlone has ever seen.

In this gripping and powerful play, Stephanie Abrahams, (Fiona Scerri) in an absolute tour de force performance, is a brilliant concert violinist who seems to have it all, is forced to re-evaluate her life when struck down by an unforeseen tragedy caused by illness.

Faced with a truth too difficult to comprehend, she consults the enigmatic psychiatrist Dr Feldmann (Clive Darling) and through a series of highly-charged encounters is led to examine her deepest emotions, and finally, to consider a future without music.

Actors Fiona Scerri and Clive Darling rise to the challenge admirably of portraying this duel between two razor-sharp minds and the wry humour that underlines their often testy exchanges. Ultimately, Tom Kempinski's dazzling play, directed by Ollie Hegarty emerges as a compelling, poignantly funny and life-enhancing tribute to the human spirit.

This play is supported by the 'Local Live Performance Programme Scheme III' administered by the Department Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and Westmeath Arts Office of Westmeath County Council.

'Duet for One' continues in Athlone Little Theatre nightly at 8pm until Wednesday, April 13. To book your seat, go to the www.athlonelittletheatre.ie website.
